All very nice. I've been ignoring my smallish bodied florentine guitar in order to finish a tenor uke for a guy. Ready to apply the finish on the uke, so should be back to work on guitar 4 in next couple of weeks.

Shop time is a premium this weekend. Had a 5-year-old grandson over. He helped set up some dust collection, then I took him on a motorcycle ride as a 'thank you'. Today we'll get together with a daughter's in-laws for a rousing game of softball and cookout. Tomorrow it's back to the grind...I'm a media guy in a military town. Plenty of honor to be given, and we'll be in the mix!

Resawing some walnut for Uke backs and sides is about all I'll really accomplish.

Working out the fixturing and tool paths for CNC'd acoustic necks. Cut two of them in total using slightly different strategies and I'm pretty sure the next ones will be good. Final fixturing will be vacuum.

I bet it is. Thing is, I have zero computer talent, or desire to attain such, so it would be a very expensive endeavor as the programming would need to be hired out...

Putting finish on my semi-hollow Lutz-plorer. The upper fin is hollow inside.

A lot of nice work going on here, [clap] [clap] [clap] , to all. Well I stole some time yesterday for guitar work. It's been too busy in the shop lately for much fun.

I made the final wood and tuner decisions on the experimental jazzer.

I also did the final neck/extension fit on on #21, and will be gluing that up today.

Tim

Tim,

That's a very cool idea for the "f hole" on your experimental jazzer. What's happening on the under side of the part of the top that curves inward? Is it supported somehow?

The figuring in the top of the flat top is pretty wild. Looks like wind swept clouds. Is that some type of bear claw figure?

Thanks for the comments. The "f hole" has a small "truss" of segmented spruce to keep it in place, I'll dig out the pic when I have more time. I'm trying to sneak in a little guitar time during the holiday.

The bearclaw is pretty wild on the other guitar. It's a piece of Sitka that was rejected by a luthier for the Sonic Sitka Project, it has a couple of really small pitch pockets I had to polish over by hand to not build up any heat. It worked well and the finish is not caved in over them as is typical. With all the bearclaw going on they are hardly visible.

Tim

I had an "incident"... No, this is not the guitar who's owner's neighbour sat on that I showed a while back, this was a new one, about ready for finishing. Knocked it clean off the bench [clap] [clap] [clap]

Oh man Arnt, I'm sorry, that's a tough one. Happens to the best.

I was I Jim Olson's shop last fall and he showed me a top in the trash box with a 4" hole in it.

He was buffing out a little spot on a guitar that was ready to ship and was holding the guitar with one hand and dressing the buff with the other and it caught the bar of Menzerna and launched it right through the lower bout of the guitar.

Lutherie can be a cruel mistress.

Sorry Arnt, that has to leave a mark. I know something like that will happen to me one day. Nice pyre Haans.

Ouch, that is truly tragic Arnt. It's hard to tell... did the sides get ruined too?

Thanks for all the sympathy folks, I appreciate it. I've replaced tops and backs on finished or nearly so instruments for other reasons too, whole necks, whatever, sometimes it better just to start over than work on something you know will never be quite right. Its no fun, not to mention a lot of wasted time (and money), but it happens, and I've learned to accept that its part of the game, deal with it and move on. So I'm not that emotional about a broken top (or two), but I admit to some foul language before calling it a night after that last one...

Hans, I've seen it before, but your picture still gives me the heebie-jeebies...

James, the sides seem OK, but I will certainly make sure there are no hidden cracks or lose braces etc before closing the box after the retop.
